CLEAN AND GREEN HALDWANI

INTRODUCTION

Haldwani is a city which alongwith its twin township of Kathgodam forms the Haldwani-Kathgodam Municipal Corporation in Nainital District in Uttarakhand state of India. It is also known as the 'Gateway to Kumaon' and is the third most populated city in Uttarakhand after Dehradun and Haridwar.

HISTORY OF HALDWANI

The Haldwani city was first named as Halduvani which represents the Haldu(Haldina Cordifolia). In 1816, after the british defeated Gorkhas, Gardener was appointed as Commissioner of Kumaon. Later George William Trail took over as commissioner and he named Halduvani as Haldwani in 1834 and this city was established in same year. It was established for people who visited Bhabhar(Dry forested area between foothills of Garhwal and Kumaon) region in cold season.In 1901, with a population of 6,624, Haldwani was the headquarters of the Bhabhar region of Nainital District, in the United Province, and it also used to become the winter headquarters of the officers of the Kumaun Division and of Nainital District. The Arya Samaj Bhavan was built in 1901 and Sanatan Dharm Sabha in 1902. The Tehsil office was opened here in 1899, when it became the tehsil headquarters of the Bhabhar, one of four division of Nainital district, and included 4 towns and 511 villages; and had a combined population of 93,445 (1901), spread over 1,279 sq. miles. Though before the formation of Nainital district in 1891, it was part of the Kumaon District, which was later called Almora district.

In 1904, it was consitituted as a 'notified area'  and in 1907 Haldwani got the status of town area.

Gora Padao, 4 km south of Haldwani was named after a British camp/post at that location in the mid-19th century, Gora being a slang for the British.

Haldwani-Kathgodam Municipal Council was established on 21 September 1942. Currently it is the third largest Municipal Council in the state of Uttarakhand after Haridwar



HEALTHCARE

The Healthcare sector of Haldwani has been improved since recent years. Although there are Govt hospitals but private sector has larger share in healthcare sector. Although every treatment is available but still prefer to visit metro cities for treatment for major diseases,especially Cancer. Government hospitals of Haldwani are Sushila Tiwari medical college which was built by the former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand 'Dr N.D Tiwari' in memory of her wife Mrs Sushila Tiwari which was later handed over to Govt of Uttarakhand and a medical college was established here whose admission fees is only Rs 15,000 only.

CONNECTIVITY


Haldwani is well connected to the capital Delhi via road and rail. Regular buses are available from Delhi which takes around 6-7 Hrs to reach Haldwani. Some luxury buses are also available but they have fix timing. All the buses leave from the Anand Vihar ISBT. Railway is another mode of transportation available from Delhi. Haldwani & Kathgodam are two railway stations. Ranikhet Express (10:45 PM from Old Delhi), Sampark Kranti (4:00 PM from Old Delhi) are some other trains available. There are other seasonal trains too. The nearest airport is Pantnagar airport but one rarely gets any passenger flights.

The connectivity to Dehradun is also good. There are a number of buses for Dehradun-Haldwani route. However, train connectivity is not that good



Haldwani is also well connected to Nainital, Almora by road(National Highway 87). Many buses are available for Haldwani to Nainital and Almora.

There is also a bypass at Kathgodam which leads to Chorgalia, Bareilly, Delhi, Hairakhan ,Sitarganj and Khatima

HALDWANI-KATHGODAM MUNICIPAL CORPORATION

Haldwani-Kathgodam Municipal Corporation is third in Uttarakhand and only municipal corporation of Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. It was upgraded to Corporation in year 2011 along with Haridwar by former chief minister of Uttarakhand, 'Dr Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank'. The council was dissolved and District Magistrate was appointed for administration. The declaring of Haldwani as Municipal Corporation lead Conflict between Council and Government. Several times this case went in Nainital High Court and several times it was downgraded to Municipal Committee but finally it was decided to remain it as Municipal Corporation. The Election for Mayor was on 28 April 2012 and Dr Jogindra Pal Singh Rautela (BJP) won the seat of 1st Mayor of Haldwani with Abdul Matin Ahmed(SP) as runner up and Hemant Bagadwal(INC) in third position.

Recently Mr Neeraj Joshi had a official visit to Sweden for the mission, 'Solid Waste Management' and after learning the various methods of their administraion, he decided to  implement a community for cleaniness of the city which he also gave a slogan, "Clean Haldwani, Green Haldwani". His various steps in this mission are-

1. Romanch Mehta, actor currently working in Star Plus 'Siya Ke Ram' hails from Haldwani. He has done his schooling from Beersheba Sen Sec School. His family resides in Transport Nagar,Rampur Road. His father is a doctor who runs a clinic near Navin Mandi, Rampur Road

2.Manmeet Singh,Actor who is best known for his role in movie 'Band Baaja Baarat', his wife sanmeet kaur Sahwney recently won ₹5 crores in Kaun Banega Crorepati. He was born in Haldwani.

3.Manmohan Singh, Former Prime Minister of India has special roots with Haldwani. His family shifted here after Partition of Pakistan. He has done his earlier schooling from MB Govt Inter College.
